Yuletide Coming In

Dublin Bay

It’s like standing on a windy beach watching the tide come in. At last I went away again on a long break in October, to the fair merry city of Dublin in Eire (Ireland). I always find myself standing on a seafront or beach looking in wonder at the vast expanse of blue-grey or turquoise ocean. It is easy to lose myself in revelry and nostalgia of other similar occasions on wind-swept beaches in other places washed by the same salty waves which lap or crash on shores of colored pebbles, black, white or red sand, plain granite boulders or rocks painted black by the tide. A year is like the sea. Time passes in waves gently lapping or violently crashing to wash and carve our destiny. The earth was restless this year, often in upheaval and turmoil. Yet, hasn’t it been so for centuries? Even when that babe of lowly insignificant status was born to be called ‘Messiah‘ ? His birth is now very much romanticized and commercialized, sometimes even denied. So, the Yuletide is rising, and in as much humble simplicity as can be mustered I wonder what being born in a stable among farm animals surrounded by the smells, sounds and animal fodder, is like. How did his parents feel, having no proper place to welcome him at birth? It was the first Christmas more than 2000 years ago. We remember and pray again for peace on earth and goodwill to all humankind, as we have done and continue to do from year to year. With this let the strains of this old carol remind us of the humbleness and simplicity of the very first Christmas. When the night was indeed silent and a small boy gave  his finest gift to a new-born child.

    1. Hi Jake, nice to hear from you. Loved your poem and thought more people should read it. It’s hard to believe how perceptions of Christmas have changed over the years with world politics. Hope you have a very merry Christmas too. Keep in touch!
