Dear Readers,

I need space to fly away, to get away from things that most depress me and sometimes make life seem purposeless and empty. I decided to fill that space with music and songs. Melodies are like a cool, fresh, clear lake, they help me feel free, at least for a little while; to forget the ongoing pressures and pretenses that make us mask how we really feel.

You are warmly invited to visit my ‘peaceful space’ at my new page tagged “Music Box”. It is still under construction and will be updated from time to time. Yet, there are YouTube links there that you may enjoy. Come rest with me, let the sounds, sights and lyrics carry you away on a journey of pure enjoyment.

BLACKOUT505

I can’t help wanting to share this, it is so inspirational in the current environment of despair and trial. At this time, disappointment and despair are also a personal emotion, as well as a popular feeling in this land. It fuels the struggles we face as a people. It is hard to talk about it without feeling the sting of tears behind my eyes, so just see and hear this song from the famous story by Victor Hugo, “Les Miserables“

Sing along, if you feel inspired, the lyrics are there for you to join the crescendo for freedom and democracy.

BLACKOUT505 BLACKOUT505BLACKOUT505BLACKOUT505BLACKOUT505 BLACKOUT505

After Adam Adli’s release on bail, 1 MP(Member of Parliament), 3 political activist and another student activist were arrested yesterday. They were all charged in court with sedition and RM5000 bail each, this morning (29th May 2013). The five were:

1. Tian Chua (PKR Vice-President)
2. Haris Ibrahim (Political activist ABU)
3. Tamrin Ghafar (Political activist PAS)
4. Hishamuddin Rais (Blogger)
5. Muhammad Safwan Anang (Student activist)

These 5 and Adam Adli are accused of urging the overthrow of the BN government. But, here is what their fellow MPs and lawyers had to say about the allegations by the BN – see this link :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=T_p56wp1k6o#

Muhammad Safwan Anang, the second student activist charged with sedition has heroically refused to post bail and chosen to prison on remand until 2 July when he appears in court. According to an internet news portal, supporters have planned a candlelight vigil outside Sungai Buloh Prison in Kuala Lumpur, tonight. http://news.abnxcess.com/2013/05/student-activist-safwan-declines-freedom-on-bail-ends-up-in-sungai-buloh-prison/?utm

The BN hopes the Rakyat will run out of steam as time progresses and will eventually endorse their suspect election victory. Whether the waiting game will favor BN is far from certain now, as many know that long-standing regimes find it difficult to change.

For the Rakyat, it is not just a matter of time but how that time is spent. The mandate is given although not acknowledged by the powers that be. Instead, we see dark days ahead that echo Operation Lalang 1978.

Yet, this won’t be the same, the Rakyat have come this far, holding courage in both hands and firmly making their aspirations undeniably clear. Popular attitudes towards racial issues seem to have changed for the better with the wider acceptance of multi-racialism and the plain out dating of racial politics, especially among Malaysia’s younger generation.

The post-May 13th generations are the future Malaysians to whom communal divisions have lesser significance, growing up in a multi-racial, modern environment with technologically enabled cross-border communications. The older generation who latch on to this begin to realize the limitless possibilities of multi-racialism turning into internationalism. From my point of view racial politics is on the out.

As the days darken with the restriction and denial of free expression and pressure to end the struggle for democratic and human rights, we pray for the strength to persist in this quest for truth, justice and genuine democracy.

If this threatens the powers that be, then it is true that a flower can shatter a stone. ( “The Flower that Shattered the Stone” John Denver). Many flowers for democracy, justice, and truth may bloom in a Malaysian Spring. The government’s attempt to ‘gag’ voices like Adam Adli’s will only multiply the voices raised by youthful Malaysia, the hope and future of our country.

“On behalf of the President and the people of the United States, we congratulate Prime Minister Najib on his coalition’s victory in Malaysia’s parliamentary elections on May 5,” a statement from the US Embassy here said.

The general election saw Barisan Nasional returned to power after winning 133 of the 222 parliamentary seats to form the new federal government.

“We also congratulate the people of Malaysia who turned out in record numbers to cast their votes as well as the parties of the opposition coalition on their campaigns as a vibrant opposition is a foundation of democracy,” the statement said. – Bernama

They left out something crucial. See this link for the missing piece of Obama’s note.

Statement by the Press Secretary on Malaysia’s Elections

Najib has already set up a Cabinet, including two or three appointed persons, who were not elected representatives of the Rakyat. These are fast-tracked ministers who were ‘sworn in’ not in accordance with due process of law. Is this a legitimate government?

Malaysians are used to the BN‘s trumpeting especially when a small word of encouragement is blown completely out of proportion to sound like high praise. But, to blackout the things that everyone knows should be said, shows a delusion gone too far. BN deludes themselves by pumping out propaganda through all the mainstream media channels, with blackouts of real news about the mushrooming “Blackout 505″ rallies and “Release Adam Adli” candle-light vigils taking place all over the country. This self-assumed government is certainly in for a bumpy ride from now on.

Yesterday, the BN went on a rampage to smother the voices of protest against the GE13 outcome which has been made official today, by seizing more than 1000 hard copies of PKR’s “Suara Keadilan”, PAS’s “Harakah” and 70 copies of DAP‘s “The Rocket” on the allegation they had broken the law by distributing these publications to non-members. The Pakatan 3 are prominent political parties with hundreds and thousands supporters and there seems nothing to prohibit members from giving their copies of publications (whether free or for nominal payment) to non-members who want to read them. Following the arrest of Adam Adli, who is now released on bail, more arrests have been made of Pakatan members and sympathizers. The BN has gone into “Operasi Lalang” like mode, attempting to silence the increasingly loud clamor for recognition of the Rakyat’s desire for a clean, just and anti-discriminatory Malaysia.

The mainstream government controlled media has completely blacked out all reports and references to these rallies and more. Still, no matter how many congratulatory messages Najib Razak receives from foreign governments, this will not banish the sour taste of BN’s Pyrrhic victory in this mother of all Malaysian elections.

They must be aware of, perhaps, the first giant steps we’ve taken towards giving ourselves a shot at installing a ‘new’ government to administer this country. Well, the cries of “INI KALILAH” (THIS TIME) and “UBAH!” (CHANGE) rose to the skies from thousands and hundreds of thousands of throats at Pakatan Rakyat (Peoples’ Coalition) rallies all around the country, in the run up to our 13th General Election. We feared reactionary responses by Barisan Nasional‘s (National Front) minions and supporters. It is not a joke, as we feared the worst.

Attacks by the BN, in various forms were launched in their attempts to dislodge the PR from the state governments they occupied, there were 5 in all in 2008, but Perak was ‘overthrown” by 3 two-legged ‘frogs’ being bought over by the BN. It was unfortunate then, that the PAS led PR State government in Perak had such a slim majority. It was hoped that PR could regain Perak, this time round. Regrettably, PR was again ousted in an even less than fair fight on 5th May. Not just Perak, but the country seems to be undermined by the BN this time.

BN had pulled all the plugs out to regain its losses and stay in power, apparently against the wishes of most ordinary Malaysians supporting “Change”. If the GE13 had been a truly CLEAN, FREE and FAIR election, victory for BN would be clear and acceptable, but in their obvious refusal to relinquish power at whatever cost and in every way possible, the electorate can only justifiably, be suspicious.

It felt certain that the tide was finally turning and that we would soon see the BN on the Opposition benches, but weeks into serious election campaigning, this became less sure. Millions, may be billions was spent on last-minute hand outs of MYR500 to households, under the (in) famous BR1M scheme, ’free-food orgies dubbed ‘charity’ or ‘welfare’ 1Malaysia dinners, lotteries for MYR50 ’free petrol’ vouchers, MYR200 vouchers post-election pay outs in BN wining constituencies, alleged ‘phantom’ voters, ballot boxes that ‘fell from the sky’ with extra votes, with more arriving in taxis and under police escort, plus many other gerrymandering tactics, in addition to the ‘suspect’ electoral roll and changing constituency boundaries. The BN did its best to “steal” our election, AND IT DID!

Protesting the outcome of Najib‘s so-called victory, is reasonable in face of all this foul, unbalanced play by those under the scales symbol (“dacing”). Yet Najib as apparent head of government, has not done anything to quell the protest but uses the Police to threaten protesters. Is this how a legitimate government operates? Behaving like thieves in the night with so much to hide, they shun being questioned?

In contrast PR and BERSIH (Movement for Clean, Free and Fair Elections) has called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the accusations of fraud and will set up a Peoples’ Tribunal to clarify, determine and define the real status of these elections. The populace have become wary and distrustful of all government agencies, including the judiciary. However, the PR is prepared to take legal action, probably, just for the record. A public trial may help, especially if attended by the international community and media. That’s the best we can hope for.

Will the world endorse Najib’s ‘victory’ and decide to revert to ‘business-as-usual” with a questionably legitimate government? Some say this is a minority government with about 47% of the popular vote, in contrast to 50%++ won by the Opposition. Is this a minority government? This doesn’t make any sense.

Forcing the Rakyat (People) to accept a doubtful election outcome and similarly endorse the dubious mandate for the BN to continue in government is clearly unacceptable. Najib’s administration has launched a negative and draconian response to the nagging questions of gerrymandering and vote rigging in this election, dubbed the “dirtiest” in Malaysian history.

Still, this is only a “phantom victory”. In its wake, threats and insinuation spews from the BN media mouth pieces attempting to re-create the racially explosive environment of 13th May 1969. This dark, bloodstained period in Malaysia’s history has always been used by the BN, especially UMNO, to threaten and coerce the electorate ever since it tainted our history.

Whatever, the world may think, the Rakyat know why democratic change is necessary. It is the Peoples’ say that matters for democracy, freedom and the unfettered exercise of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is not asking for the sun, moon and stars, but what is possible to free our country from all vestiges of neo-colonialism. True ‘Merdeka’ (Independence) is yet to come.

I wasn’t overjoyed or saddened at the news of Margaret Thatcher’s demise. She was the UK’s first woman Prime Minister, yet seemed less concerned about what concerned most women - their children. I’m not British, and seeing the trend of ‘capitalist’ and ‘neo-liberal’ behavior she set in motion in Britain and in other countries of similar economic persuasion during her term as PM, I might feel glad not being a claimant of her legacy.

The impression I had of her, after the feeling of triumph that followed the first time she took office, was that she was a hard character. Perhaps, she felt she had to forget being a woman and a mother, to be the “first among equals” in a man-dominated political world. That was one of the saddest things about her, she forgot those struggling to survive, she forgot she was a mother, although an influential and wealthy one.

Her devotion to privatization of basic amenities caused leaders of other countries like Malaysia to follow suit, with high hopes that capitalistic enrichment of the few would filter down to the masses. The consequences of these and other measures she resorted to like increasing the cost of tertiary education about 400% for foreign students in the 1980′s caused hardship and heart-ache to middle-income parents who had sent their children to Britain hoping to give them a better future. For some of these, their hopes were dashed as finances dried up in trying to cope with such tuition fee increases, apart from living costs.

To work on a student visa, then, would be to break the law and face deportation and an end to university study. So, those who couldn’t find the money or a more viable alternative were cut-short. Their studies suffered sudden death as did their aspirations for the future. They would have wasted the first two or three years of their university lives in Britain and come away with nothing to show for it. Did Margaret Thatcher care? Of course not, they were simply a bunch of foreigners willing to pay for a world-class university education.

The UK certainly had world-class university education, second to none, up to then, accessible to those who could afford it. Not everyone, but still a fair chance on the basis of merit – those who qualified. Scholarships were also available, although only to the very best.

But, when Mrs. Thatcher, as she then was, raised the fees without sufficient warning, so many fell through the cracks in the system and had to deal with this fall out. So, Mrs. Thatcher ruined the hopes of a generation of international students in Britain. But that was only the beginning…

A few more years down the road, Thatcherite privatization began its organized erosion of public utilities in the UK. She had started earlier by turning off the ‘milk tap’ for nursery school kids. The four and five- year- olds were left milkless at school, earning Mrs. Thatcher the title of, “Thatcher, Milk Snatcher”. However, neo-liberal conservatism was in fashion and Mrs. Thatcher rode the waves, digging a widening trench between the wealthy , middle-class and social security dependents in Britain. She made many friends among the like-minded. One such person being Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, PM of Malaysia.

Dr. M, as he is popularly known in Malaysia, counted Mrs. Thatcher among his closest allies and friends. He was easily persuaded to join the Thatcherite club. Malaysia then began to ape British privatization policies, minus the ‘liberal’ from ‘neo’. Malaysia was plunged into a privatization frenzy, making the rich, richer and the poor, poorer without any practical social security safety net. Yes, there was the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) which came with SOCSO. Yet, these didn’t form any comprehensive social security system being tied to employment. Those unemployed, including housewives and volunteers were excluded from these flimsy social security options.

Malaysia took to a trend where financial security was only found in one’s savings and investment capabilities. Since then, Malaysia’s free-market became an even freer capitalistic one. Middle-income earners were encouraged to buy shares in the newly privatized utility companies, to increase financial security from dividends received. The system was complicated by affirmative action policies intended to create an economic level playing field but which ultimately served to stratify society and cause a deeper chasm between haves and have-nots.

Worse still, rampant corruption, nepotism and cronyism has set in and appears to have become the norm. Thanks to Baroness Thatcher and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, Malaysia’s recovery from the damage done, especially to those struggling to keep families afloat on meager incomes – RM1000 and below, striving to swim against a current that keeps pushing them downstream. Basic necessities for survival get more and more out of their reach as prices of goods and services keep spiraling. It will take a huge, really HUGE OVERHAUL of our government systems to bring back a more equal distribution of wealth in this country, even to pre-Mahathir/Thatcher levels, over a very long period.

So, we thank Baroness ‘Privatization‘ Thatcher and Tun ‘ Free-Market Capitalist’ for the worsening current economic inequalities in society today.

‘Terimakasih’, and hopefully, your soul will rest in peace. As for the still living Tun, destiny will decide.

Goodbye, Mrs. Thatcher, perhaps it is the end of your era.

Some may remember the 2002 movie “Maid in Manhattan” with Jennifer Lopez as Marisa Ventura, a mother working as a chamber maid in a classy Manhattan hotel. She meets a politician, Christopher Marshall, who falls in love with her and is staying at the hotel where she works. He mistakes her for someone else but later finds out, and she gets fired from her job for this seeming deception. However, after the story runs its course, true love triumphs in the end, and they live happily ever after.
Many young girls, especially those from impoverished rural areas perhaps hope such dreams will come true for them in a more affluent environment where they can earn a decent living, and get a better life for their families and themselves. But, the reality isn’t as simple or straight-forward as they think.

The reality in Malaysia, is far more complex, difficult and at times tragic. There are many foreign domestic workers in Malaysia, who come from countries around Southeast Asia. They come with high hopes to earn a decent living to provide for families and dependents back home. Some may have dreams of having a better life through marriage with a local, if they happened to meet Mr.Right. Yet, those with dreams of marriage may be fewer than those intent on earning an honest living. Whatever, it may be, these women have a right to their dreams, that may or not be realistic. This glowing aspect of going to a foreign country to work or start a new life has its downside which could turn those rosy dreams to ashes.

Firstly, there is a long list of “Don’ts” that foreign workers must keep in mind if they work in this country. Some of the main ‘don’ts’ are:

Don’t get Married, Don’t get sick, Don’t get pregnant, Don’t get unionized, Don’t disagree with your employer, Don’t change your Employer or your job category,
Don’t complain about bad living or working conditions and terms, Don’t socialize unless allowed to by the employer.

Domestic workers, especially those with ‘stay-in’ household jobs, are often isolated from the outside world. The employer is in full control of the whole working and living environment. There are many well-meaning employers who treat their domestic workers reasonably well, but there are some others who see their domestic workers as nothing more than a commodity or utility they have purchased for their convenience. Migrant domestic workers commonly work between 12 to 20 hours a day. Meal breaks and rest breaks are very brief, may be 15 – 30 minutes a day. Some get only 3-4 hours of sleep a night starting their work as early as 5.00am, and finishing about 1 or 2 in the morning.

They are also subjected to mandatory testing, a medical examination, at specific intervals. This is compulsory. The only choice being consent or deportation. A migrant domestic worker found pregnant or ill can be deported without a hearing. Essentially, Malaysian employment laws are optional for migrant domestic workers i.e. an employer may choose to apply these laws to their MDW or not. Most employers choose what their commonsense dictates. The problem is that, domestic work is not considered work under Malaysian employment laws.

When it comes to wages, MDWs are at the mercy of their employers. The lack of proper regulation allows arbitrary wage deductions. Since employers pay thousands of Ringgit to get a MDW, in fees to the recruitment agent and levies to the government, some recover these expenses from the worker by deducting a percentage of their wages each month. Since wages are already low (the legal minimum wage being RM800 and RM900 per month for Sabah and Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia respectively) any deduction shrinks the already meager sum. So, even if thrift is imposed, it takes a long time to accumulate a proper amount to send home, yet many MDW persevere in sending home whatever they can.

There is no guarantee of safety for the MDW. There have been some cases where migrant domestic workers have been ill-treated and abused by employers. Some deaths have resulted from such abuse and physical violation of MDWs and others are psychologically and physically scarred for life. Employers in certain widely publicized cases have been prosecuted but many others resort to having the domestic worker deported or returned to the agent and everything is kept quiet.

On the other hand, there have been MDWs who may be mentally disturbed, possibly because of earlier ill-treatment and isolation, or untreated medical causes. However, these sometimes go undetected, or symptoms are ignored by employers. The few cases of domestic workers abusing children in their care or retaliating against their employers have also been prosecuted.

However, one may sympathize with the MDW as the conditions under which they have to live in a foreign land sometimes with little or no contact with family or even persons from their own community make life more difficult to bear. They are away from home and all that they are familiar with for at least 2 or 3 years before they can have a month’s leave at home.

The working and living environment which a MDW finds herself (or himself) can quickly put an end to those high hopes and aspirations each carries with them when they begin their journey to seek a better life in a foreign country.

Next time you meet or decide to employ a migrant worker, be aware that they are in an environment they are unfamiliar with and they should be allowed space and time to get to know their employers and the ways of this land. They are human beings like you. Think of what you would do if you were in their shoes.

Hey! Never thought you were listening to this common human being. Obviously, you’ve got a very BIG EAR! So, you heard my gripe about what kind of Pope, this opinionated one thought should wear Peter’s sandals. You gave me what I wanted and I hope it’s a good thing. Well, at least he seems to have started off right. Sincerely hope he can make the necessary changes, especially in this too-much-of-me-world.

Funny really, how Benedict’s successor really seems a down- to- earth, no frills Pontiff. At least, he uses public transport and acts normal. There’s a hope, he’ll make the needs of the poor a priority, and do this firmly, so nobody else can gainsay or hijack these Christian values. Still, hopefully, he’ll rethink certain contentious subjects, like can God love gay people? Or understand the dilemma women are in when it comes to unwanted pregnancies, the safety of using condoms and other contraceptives to stop the spread of HIV-AIDS? What do you think Jesus would say to all that?

Years ago, I used to get e-newsletters from a Catholic Church website and responded to certain articles uploaded on it. There’s one that sticks till today. It was about an international Catholic charity working in Africa that distributed condoms for HIV-AIDS prevention. Any lay person working with HIV victims would think that a commonsense measure and a mercy to those, especially women and children raped or sexually abused by those who exploit others for pleasure, or intentionally wield sexual violence as a weapon. Worse still, such violence can result not only in painful physical and psychological injury but in prolonged suffering and death through HIV-AIDS as well.

The shock came when those pious, well-meaning, highly educated Catholics condemned this charity in extremely harsh terms, taking a holier-than-thou stance. Did these people, who did not live in a war zone where the danger of violence and death are everyday hazards, even think about the consequences of their bigotry? There are many reports by various charities, international governmental and non-governmental organizations working in Africa and other impoverished countries where lawlessness is the law. Where human life is valued less than a prized pet’s. There are horrifying photographs of dead babies with crushed bodies, piles of dead bodies with hacked limbs…I needn’t go on. You probably know what I mean.

Yet, I wonder whatever was meant by “the love of God”? Does God like to see innocent human beings suffer so terribly? Does God not take pity on the child forced to become a killing machine at 12 or younger? Has God forsaken these the poor, the defenseless and the blameless? Didn’t Jesus himself forgive the woman caught in adultery ,when there seemed no condemnation of the man with whom she committed it?

These are questions without answers which Francis I, must find answers to, at this dangerous time where technology can serve any purpose, and the horror of mass massacre becomes daily news. For those who still live in a cotton-woolled world, while war rages outside, these losses are something remote and improbable . The sandals of the Fisherman must tread carefully with humility, discernment and unshakable faith, admitting all imperfection, yet doing its best to keep up with Christ.

There are many cultures which have taken on the art of using shadows as a medium of communication in performing arts. In Malaysia, we have the “wayang kulit“, a traditional Malay, shadow puppet show. The stylized elaborately designed puppets interact, dance and glide behind a large white cloth screen on which a very bright white light is shone. The dramas acted out by these puppets are usually ancient myths and legends. But, the idea of shadow play has actually taken on a more modern usage. This also reminds me of Rey Ferrer’s artwork which this American artist blogs about on his “urbanwallart” blog. I visit his blog from time to time and the more I look at his pictures, the many shades of grey, black and white seem to move like a shadow dance. Speaking of shadows, a friend of mine, another blogger I follow sent me this link.

What one can do with shadows! This is purely for your enjoyment, a little light, refreshing moment of happiness. The good shadows. Sit back and just watch. Be inspired by this wonderful shadow play. Journey with the Dogue.
